According to ESPN famous reporters Dave McMenamin and Shams Charania, the two brothers of the Bass family are entering professional sports outside the Los Angeles Lakers.
Lakers Vice President and Vice President of R&D Joey Bass, and Lakers Assistant General Manager Jesse Bass, co-founded Bass Sports Capital. The new company is an investment institution that seeks acquisitions and partner opportunities in the global sports sector.
Joey, 41, and Jesse, 37, have held various positions in the Lakers organization and have been gradually promoted. The team was bought by their late father Jerry Bass in 1979 and left to their children through trust after their death in 2013. Both brothers have focused on talent introduction and development in their careers with the Lakers. Joey serves as president and CEO of South Bay Lakers, a subsidiary of Lakers’ Development League, while Jesse is the Lakers’ scout director, participating in the draft process throughout the year.
In June this year, the Bass family agreed to sell its controlling stake in the team to Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter at a team value of $10 billion. Sources revealed that the deal is expected to be approved by the NBA board of directors in the coming months. Sources said that after the deal is finally completed, both brothers will continue to stay with the Lakers and their sister Jenny Buss will continue to serve as the team's main director for the foreseeable future.
"Our vision is to really look for strategic investments and great partners - especially sports-related investments," Joey Bass told ESPN. "Bass Sports Capital will not compete with the interests of our (hold) Lakers or NBA. This is our first step towards the future of sports. It is exciting to see the growth opportunities that exist—especially those where we can add value to our skill set—are."
